While few architects are adept at successfully designing three facades, much less four, Broad ought to have selected an office that could demonstrate a more diverse portfolio of urban architecture, thus giving L.A. a better chance at a museum which embodies the notion of spatial and civic porosity rather than a visual hat-trick. Diller, Scofidio & Renfro will need to convince their client, whose passion for great design has, in the past, notoriously been tempered into mediocrity by his wallet, that all sides of the Bunker Hill site are fertile terrain for experimentation, and are catalytic points for actively reaching out to the surrounding city fabric. Only then will L.A. get a museum it can be proud of, and Eli Broad a building that will carry his legacy well-beyond this century and into the next. But for now we wait, and hold our breath till the next press conference, hoping the ghosts of Bunker Hill’s potent pre-war metropolitan fabric will somehow work their way into the design and make for a stunning spatial moment in civic culture. L.A. needs that more than anything now, and the best possible building we can get will be the one that repairs at least some of the damage done by sixty years of narcissistic speculation atop Bunker Hill, rather than another shimmering backdrop for the occasional film shoot, or an over-wrought playground for the corporate denizens of late-capital.

As these nodes and corridors flourish financially and are infused with development capital (post-recession of course), L.A.’s congestion will not decrease, but rather another layer of congestive urbanism and physical complexity will be overlaid upon the existing city. While planners, politicians, and the press promote these rail lines as projects that bring Angelenos closer together, it is doubtful that it will have any real impact on the crushing traffic and pollution that has made the city infamous in both cinema and the press. As these new corridors of development are enhanced, and property values rise, the original inhabitants of the now gentrifying neighborhoods will be too poor to stay in their homes and apartments. These unfortunate economic casualties, marginalized by California’s lack of educational investment and job creation since the 1970’s, may be pushed into areas even more disconnected from the rest of the city, exacerbating a social problem that will only get worse as the current economic instability exports skilled urban jobs to Asia and replaces them with service work. The city will not become more connected as Hawthorne suggests in his statement quoted at the opening of this post, but will instead continue to fracture and mutate into increasingly singular environments that are without any kind of deep social or economic linkage.

The cautionary tale here is that no amount of planning and infrastructure can save the contemporary city from continued social and developmental instability. Adding more rapid transit on the limited scale that L.A. is proposing will not solve its freeway congestion, just as covering up the city’s past environmental transgressions in the Owens Valley with solar technology will not repair the ecology of that area. These strategies are merely band-aids attempting to heal a larger problem that stems from decades of poor urban planning, NIMBYism, and environmental abuse. This problem will not be resolved through planning, politics, or infrastructure, but as John May outlined in his talks this fall, will be experienced through potentially catastrophic systemic failures that will force us as a society to reconcile our relationships with the natural and built realms, and simultaneously embrace forms of adaptation we have not even begun to consider.

After reading the texts’ climatic ending for one last time I put the book back into my carryon, choosing instead to gaze out the window at the Mojave Desert some 28,000 feet below the aircraft. We were closing in on the L.A. metropolitan area and the brown smear of desert was giving way to the rocky peaks of the San Bernandino Mountains and the equally brown haze of urbanity beyond. Below me Federally protected wilderness was giving way to the threads of civilization as forest and canyon parted for freeway and suburb. I squinted down at the emerging sprawl of cul de sacs, strip malls, and single family homes that make up the Eastern San Gabriel Valley, knowing why they were there, how they arrived, and that there would be more.
