-John Doe, after a few songs, began chastising some moshers in the front row for being a bit too eager and thereby endangering the group of reporters and photogs in the front row.  It seemed like a good idea in the name of safety, but I imagine he lost some “punk points” for the move.

-At some point in the evening my ears stopped picking up on the treble of Zoom’s guitar and the evening went from warm nostalgia to the thought that perhaps today’s youth are past communicating a cultural resistance through music.  The evenings nostalgic redux and  cross-section of California’s top punk acts was a living history and one that left no messages beyond being reduced to plain kitsch.  The “kids” up on stage were alright, but the revolution they once cultivated has been re-fabricated in its artificial form via media, commerce, and even literature ten times over.  No revolutions were borne out of music after punk.  Even if Grunge manifested itself as a kind of harbinger of change, it was the opening of a door to a music style and youth culture that is forever tied to passive nihilism, or blissful consumption- anything but revolt.

-At one point mid-way through X’s set, I looked over and upward into the VIP Section and noticed that the plaid-suited Jeffrey Dietch was chatting with some gal in a fluorescent yellow windbreaker.

Terminal preppies?  I think so.

-We left early to beat the crowds.
